The phrase "To thine own self be true" has really resonated with me over the past few months. Of course, in context, it is ironic given the speaker, Polonius, and his blunders both before and after the advice that he gives Laertes, but the phrase itself stands alone as good advice and is frequently quoted out of context. It encapsulates my feelings both on the litter itself and my more personal feelings on other matters that have popped up over the course of the year.
Jazz herself was bred when we saw A Midsummer's Night Dream one hot July weekend, and almost exactly 9 weeks after the production (some 9 weeks and 12 hours) these little beauties were born. My favorite play-- the play whose words I continue to unravel on my own time, long after having been in any literature course, is Hamlet, but I quickly realized that such a grim play does not bode well for the registered names of happy, bouncy, healthy Saluki puppies, so I thought a more encompassing theme of "Shakespeare" would make it easier for everyone.
The litter itself is somewhat indulgent for me because it is my first litter where it is really "mine" and the Shakespearean theme is equally indulgent to someone who teaches literature as a full time job. Jazz herself was born in my house a little over four years ago in the very room where she gave birth, and since she was the only girl in my litter, all of my hopes and dreams were put on her shoulders. She became my first bred-by champion just after her second birthday. Shortly after the birth of her puppies, she became the first Saluki to get a CHIC number, from the scheme that I managed to pass through while chairing Health & Genetics during her pregnancy. Her visage embodies my heart dog, her father-- their grandfather, whom I lost too young, and while none of these babies will be him, I am pleased that there will be little Najib grandchildren running around all the same to be loved and adored by their owners.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
